Gladiators Sign Akins; Trade Dorich

The Gwinnett Gladiators have signed forward Drew Akins. In addition, Gwinnett has traded defenseman Alan Dorich to the Ontario Reign in exchange for future considerations.

Akins returns to Gwinnett after he appeared in training camp with the Gladiators this season. He skated in three games for the Gladiators last season after he completed his senior season at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He did not record a point with Gwinnett but collected seven penalty minutes in his stint with the Gladiators.

In four collegiate seasons with the University of Minnesota-Duluth, Akins recorded 51 points (21 goals, 30 assists) in 153 career collegiate games. The Excelsior, Minnesota, native served as team captain for Minnesota-Duluth in his senior season last year.

Dorich was signed by Gwinnett on December 9th and appeared in one game with the Gladiators, earning two penalty minutes in the Gladiators 8-3 loss against Wheeling in Johnstown, PA on December 11th.

Dorich joined Gwinnett after he tallied on assist in two games with Wheeling and did not record a point in three games with Kalamazoo this season. A rookie out of Northern Michigan University, Dorich collected 17 assists in 136 career collegiate games in the CCHA.

The Gladiators are the AA affiliate of the Atlanta Thrashers and play all home games at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
