Gladiators Playoff March Update 2
Published on March 10, 2010 under ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
2010 Playoff March Notes:
The Gladiators have 12 regular season games remaining with a possible 24 points still to be earned.
The Gladiators can earn a maximum point total of 86, which would not necessarily earn them a playoff spot.
Gwinnett moved into 9th position in the American Conference standings with their win over Cincinnati on Monday.
They are tied with 10th-place Wheeling in points but have two games in hand over them.
The Gladiators and Nailers are three points ahead of 11th place Trenton and just two points shy of 8th place Reading.
The top team in each of the three divisions of the American Conference qualify for the playoffs, along with the next five best teams by point total.
The 7th and 8th place spots in the American Conference standings are the most conceivable playoff spots still available.
Toledo, in 7th place, has 66 points through 60 games, while Reading, in 8th place, has 64 points through 59 games.
Gwinnett currently sits in 9th place with 62 points through 60 games.
Gwinnett has three important games in four days at South Division rival Charlotte this Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday.
The Gladiators play 10 of their final 12 regular season games against teams currently in a playoff position.
The Gladiators can move into playoff contention by the end of this week by earning three of a possible six points along with Reading losing all three of their games and Wheeling losing one of their two, or by winning all three games and Reading earning less than four of a possible six points through the weekend.
Currently, 91 points will guarantee a playoff spot, as Reading, who rests in the 8th and final playoff spot, can only amass a possible 90.
As of Wednesday afternoon, March 10th, just five points separate the four teams occupying the eighth through eleventh positions in the American Conference standings.
The Johnstown Chiefs, currently in last place in the American Conference with 41 points, have been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, as they can only earn a possible 63 total points, putting them one point shy of the current 8th place Reading Royals, who have 64 points.
The South Carolina Stingrays can be the first team to clinch a 2010 Kelly Cup Playoff spot with a combination of four points earned themselves or lost by the Gladiators.
They could conceiveably clinch by Friday night with a Gwinnett loss Thursday and a victory over visiting Florida Friday night.
A combination of 14 points gained by South Carolina or lost by Charlotte guarantees the Stingrays the 2009-10 South Division title.
