Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - In a Wednesday night contest the Victoria Salmon Kings matched up against the Idaho Steelheads in the first of a three-game set at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. The Salmon Kings gave the nod to Matt Keetley, while the Steelheads countered with Rejean Beauchemin.
Victoria scored the game's opening goal at the 10:10 mark of the first period. Off a faceoff to the right of Beauchemin, Chad Painchaud carried the puck toward the net and squeezed it between the pads of the Idaho goaltender. The tally was Painchaud's 26th of the season. The Salmon Kings widened their lead less than three minutes later when a streaking Randall Gelech received a Painchaud pass into the slot and went forehand to backhand to pocket his 18th of the year over the glove of Beauchemin. Victoria skated into the intermission with a 2-0 lead over the Steelheads.
Idaho clawed back in the middle frame as Mark Derlago scored his team-leading 32nd and 33rd goals of the year. The first tally was scored 2:11 into the middle frame when a shot from the left corner boards deflected off of Keetley and into net. The tying goal came on a 5-on-3 power play at 15:58 for the Steelheads when Derlago received a cross-crease backdoor pass from Evan Barlow, and the Steelheads' sniper fired it in the empty cage. The game remained in a 2-2 deadlock through forty minutes of play.
The Steelheads took their first lead of the game at the 2:02 mark of the third period when Kevin DeVergilio took a feed from Brandan Milnamow into the left faceoff circle and out waited a diving Keetley to slide the puck around the Victoria netminder. The goal was DeVergilio's 15th of the campaign. Idaho was forced to make a goaltending change 5:08 into the period when Beauchemin left the game and was replaced by Richard Bachman. Idaho would go in front by two goals at the 12:46 mark as Adam Huxley scored his sixth goal of the year. The Steelheads rounded out the scoring when Derlago netted his hat trick goal on a 5-on-3 power play at 14:27. Steelheads 5 Salmon Kings 2
Victoria went 0/3=00.0% on the power play, while Idaho was 2/6=33.3%. The Steelheads outshot the Salmon Kings 36-23.
