Atlanta Gladiators News Release

The Columbia Inferno used three second period goals to beat the Gwinnett Gladiators 3-2 on Saturday night at the Carolina Coliseum.

Mike Stathopoulos' second goal of the season gave the Gladiators a 1-0 lead late in the first period. The forward shrugged off two Columbia defenders as he slid into the Inferno zone and beat the netminder Mike Minard just inside the far goal post for the goal. Peter Flache sprung Stathopoulos on a break to pick up an assist on the tally at 16:27 of the first period.

Bryson Busniuk tied the game at 1-1 on a deflection as he was able to redirect a shot past Gladiators netminder Sean Fields 1:50 into the second period. Walker McDonald added an assist on the goal as he took the initial shot from the right wing point.

Columbia took the lead on D'Arcy McConvey's 5th goal of the season. The forward was able to jam the puck past Fields at 4:22 of the second period.

John Longo and Brad Ralph added the assists on the power play goal.

McConvey's second goal of the night, unassisted, gave the Inferno a 3-1 lead on the power play. The forward capitalized on a Gladiators turn over to pick up the goal at 12:07 of the second period.

Jeff Campbell's snapshot from the slot cut the Columbia lead back to 3-2 on the power play with 3:15 left in the second period but that's as close as the Gladiators would get. Brett Engelhardt added an assist on the tally as he fed a waiting Campbell. Ryan Van Buskirk also picked up an assist on the goal moving the puck up the ice to Engelhardt.

Sean Fields suffers his first loss of the season with the Gladiators as the netminder made 21 saves as the Gladiators fall to 12-5-4 on the season. Columbia went 2-for-4 on the power play while Gwinnett was 1-for-7 on the power play in the loss.
