DULUTH, GA - The Gwinnett Gladiators fell short to the Wheeling Nailers, 4-1 at the Arena at Gwinnett Center on New Years Eve.

The Nailers (17-13-1) got on the scoreboard first when Mike Gershon scored a power play goal at the 7:10 mark in the first period, after the puck deflected off a Gladiator into the air and past goaltender Edward Pasquale.

The Gladiators (14-15-5) quickly responded less than two minutes later when Michael Forney found Tim Miller coming across the blue line and Miller buried his twelfth this season. Pat Galivan also added an assist.

Gershon got his second tally of the night and fourth of the season to help Wheeling take the lead back and make it 2-1 at the 11:57 mark. The Nailers increased their lead to two with a controversial goal from Ben Street to end the first period 3-1. The goal light never went on and replays showed it may not have crossed the line.

The back and forth action continued through a scoreless second period. At the end of forty minutes Wheeling had out-shot Gwinnett 31-16.

The Nailers again found the back of the net 9:21 into the third period when Nick Petersen added a goal to cap a 4-1 final and give him a tally in six games in a row.

The Gladiators are 0-13-0-4 when trailing after two periods of play this season.

Gwinnett's next game is on Sunday, January 2nd as they face the South Carolina Stingrays at 4:00 pm.

The Gladiators are the AA affiliate of the Atlanta Thrashers and play all home games at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
