Darryl Lloyd Scores Twice in Kalamazoo's Victory Over Elmira
December 31, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings celebrated the 9th Annual New Year's Bash presented by COOL 101 and WWMT in grand fashion defeating the Elmira Jackals 5-2 in front of crowd of 4,901 at Wings Stadium.
Featuring end-to-end action and plenty of checking, the first period on New Year's Eve felt more like a playoff game than the last night of 2010.
Elmira jumped ahead with an early goal, when Patrick Coulombe snuck in the slot and one-timed a behind the net pass from Tyler Donati 3:37 into the opening period.
Responding immediately, Kalamazoo pulled even 1:07 later on a rebound marker from Andrew Fournier. The goal was Fournier's 14th of the season; tying him with Kory Karlander for the team-lead.
Off a face-off deep in the K-Wings defensive zone, the Jackals regained the lead when Corey Cowick (2nd) spun the puck off the shoulder of goaltender Riley Gill and just across the goal line. Cowick's tally capped off three goals in span of 3:08 between the teams.
Avenging the last goal from the first period, Gill played a vital role in tying the game at 2-2 midway in the second. After stopping several point blank shots to help kill off a 5-on-3 power-play for Elmira, Gill kicked away an even strength shot from A.J. Perry that went right to the tape of Mitch Versteeg, who found a streaking Darryl Lloyd (2nd). Lloyd finished the rush by blasting a wrister past Daren Machesney.
Earning their first lead of the night with 2:33 remaining in the stanza, Matt Duffy, who played for Elmira head coach Malcolm Cameron last season when the duo were with members of the Florida Everblades, rang up his second goal of the season on a blue line slap shot. Both of Duffy's goals this season have come against Cameron and the Jackals.
Last season with the Wheeling Nailers, Aaron Clarke led the ECHL with five shorthanded goals. In his first game with Kalamazoo after being traded from Stockton, Clarke (5th) scored his first goal as a K-Wing on his first shorthander of the year.
Later in the period, Lloyd (3rd) put the game of reach earning his second of the night on a breakaway.
Down by three goals, frustration set in to the Jackals and in particular Jon Mirasty. Mirasty, who was reassigned by the Syracuse Crunch prior to the game, received seven minutes in penalties with 49 seconds remaining in the game, including five minutes for charging Gill after the whistle.
