Atlanta Gladiators News Release
Two goals by Brad Schell could not help the Gladiators past the Columbia Inferno in a 4-3 overtime loss on Thursday night at the Carolina Coliseum. With the loss, Gwinnett falls to 33-18-7 on the season as the Gladiators have now won just once out of 18 chances when trailing after two periods this season.
Columbia took a 1-0 lead on the Gladiators on the power play midway through the first period. Parked in the slot, Bryan Rodney beat Gladiators netminder Dave Caruso from point blank range for the goal. Brendan Cook and Luke Fulghum posted the assists for the Inferno on the goal at the 10:54 mark of the first period.
With less than a second left in the opening period, Columbia pushed their lead two goals. Off an offensive zone draw, the Inferno won the draw cleanly and cycled the puck in the Gwinnett zone before Luke Fulghum was able to beat Caruso from the left wing circle for the marker. Rodney collected the assist on the goal as he moved the puck along to Fulghum to set up the marker.
Gwinnett cut the Columbia lead to one goal just 2:32 into the second period. Brad Schell took a pass from Scott Mifsud along the right wing circle and ripped a slap shot past Columbia netminder Todd Ford for the goal. The goal was Schell's 24th marker of the season. Jon Awe also had an assist on the marker.
Schell's second goal of the game at the 16:30 mark of the second period tied the game at two. Schell was able to corral a bouncing puck in the slot and beat Ford for his 25th goal of the season. Mike Vigilante and Jon Awe posted the assists on the goal for Gwinnett.
The 2-2 tie was short lived as Brendan Cook was able to give the Inferno a 3-2 lead. Cook's marker came just 26 seconds after Schell's second goal of the game as he walked into the slot and beat Caruso for the tally. Jeff Winchester posted an assist on the goal as he set up Cook on a 2-on-1 break. Jeff Miles also had an assist on the goal.
Chad Painchaud tied the game at three with his 19th goal of the season at 7:45 of the third period. Painchaud beat Ford as he settled a bouncing puck before jamming it past the netminder for the goal. Chris Thompson posted an assist as he set up Painchaud working into the Columbia zone on 2-on-1 break.
Jeff Miles posted the game-wining goal for the Inferno at the 3:06 mark of overtime sliding into the slot and lifting a backhand over the shoulder of Caruso for the marker. Rodney and Mike Vellinga posted the assists on the goal for the Inferno.
Caruso finished with 27 saves in the loss for Gwinnett as the Gladiators went scoreless on five power play chances in the contest.
