Fresno Falcons News Release
The Fresno Falcons announced today that players and staff members will shave their heads on Thursday, March 15 in recognition of St. Baldrick's Day. The event will raise money for pediatric cancer.
The event will take place on the patio of The Elbow Room, located at 731 W. San Jose in Fig Garden Village. Supercuts will be providing the hair cuts. Fans can log-on to the St. Baldrick's Day website at www.stbaldricks.org and search for the Fresno Falcons, or can link directly to the Falcons page from the Falcons website at www.fresnofalcons.com. Fans can make donations to see their favorite player or staff member have his head shaved. All donations are tax deductible. "This is an event that I have been involved with before, and it's a great opportunity to raise money for pediatric cancer research," Falcons' Head Coach Matt Thomas said. "We hope that we have a good turnout of fans at The Elbow Room on March 15."
"The Fresno Falcons, Supercuts, and The Elbow Room urge everyone to attend this very meaningful event," said Falcons Vice President, and cancer survivor, Alan Friedman.
St. Baldrick's Day began in 1999, when three friends were looking for a way to give back to society. These three friends turned their company's St. Patrick' s Day party into a benefit for kids with cancer. They suggested shaving their heads, since kids typically lose their hair during cancer treatment. The three planned to raise "$17,000 on the 17th," recruiting 17 colleagues to raise $1,000 each to be shorn. Instead, the first St. Baldrick's event, held on March 17, 2000, raised over $104,000. From those humble beginnings, St. Baldrick's Day has moved nationwide, with over $8.2 million raised, and 271 events in 42 states in 2006.
