Fresno Falcons News Release
Boise, Idaho - The Fresno Falcons dropped the first game of a three-game series at Qwest Arena on Thursday night, falling to the Idaho Steelheads 6-1.
Idaho scored a pair of goals just 13 seconds apart late in the first period to take a 2-0 lead through 20 minutes. Tuomas Mikkonen opened the scoring at 18:21, gathering in a loose puck on the near post following a goal-mouth scramble, and pushing a shot past Scott Stirling for his 10th goal of the season. Then, at 18:34, Marty Flichel converted on a penalty shot, wristing a shot past Stirling's stick side for his 32nd of the year.
The Steelheads doubled their lead with two more goals in the second period. Darrell Hay gave Idaho a 3-0 advantage at 4:26, beating Stirling with a long wrist shot from the blue line, and Mikkonen added his second of the night, cashing in on a power-play opportunity at 8:17.
Colin Shields extended the Idaho lead to 5-0, scoring a power-play goal 1:39 into the third period.
The Falcons finally got on the scoreboard at 5:07. John Wroblewski skated into the Idaho zone and uncorked a long shot from the right-wing side. Steelheads' goaltender Steve Silverthorn made the save, but kicked a rebound into the left-wing circle, and Brett Hammond shot the puck into the open net for his sixth goal of the season.
The Steelheads regained their five-goal lead at 12:57, as Kyle Peto beat Stirling with a shot from the right point for Idaho's third power-play goal of the night.
