Gladiators Beat Lynx 3-2 in Shootout

The Gladiators needed 10 rounds in a shootout to knock off the Augusta Lynx 3-2 at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center last night as Joe Bourne's goal in the final round was the winner.

Augusta opened up a 1-0 lead as Scott Kelman took a centering feed and beat Gladiators goaltender Michael Garnett at the 4:03 mark of the first period. Greg Jacina and Josh Bennett added the assists on the goal.

Brandon Dietrich tied the contest up at 1-1 with a power play goal just three seconds into the man advantage. Kevin Doell won the facoff cleanly to Dietrich who beat Augusta net minder Jason Saal from the high slot at the 5:08 mark of the period.

Matt Dzieduszycki regained the lead for the Lynx in the second period as he picked up a rebound in the slot and flipped the puck over an outstretched Garnett at the 13:55 mark of the period. Louis Goulet picked up an assist on the goal.

Right as a Gladiators power play expired, Mike Vigilante slipped through the slot and fired a writs shot that slipped past Saal to tie the contest up at two goals apiece. Jim Jackson added an assist on the goal at the 13:19 mark of the period as he pushed the puck through the neutral zone to Vigilante.

Neither team could capitalize on chances in the overtime session as the game was pushed to a shootout. Goals were exchanged in the first round and the sixth round before Joe Bourne was able to pick up the winner in the 10th round of the shootout for the win.

Michael Garnett made 22 saves in the contest and improves to 5-1-0 on the season. The Gladiators went 1-for-5 on the power play while they were perfect on the penalty kill.

It's backpack night at the Arena at Gwinnett Center tomorrow night as the South Carolina Stingrays make their first trip of the season to Gwinnett. The first 2,000 kids 12 and under receive a backpack courtesy of Peggy Slappey Properties and the Gladiators. Faceoff is set for 7:35 p.m., doors open at 6:05 p.m.
