Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Lansing, MI - Cedar Rapids righthander Sawyer Gipson-Long was efficient and effective over 6.0 frames of one-run ball while the middle of the order combined to score eight runs in a 10-2 stomping of the Lansing Lugnuts on Wednesday evening. Kyler Fedko scored four runs and had three hits, Yunior Severino went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and Alerick Soularie drove in four while reaching base four times to fuel the lineup. With a Wisconsin loss to Peoria, the Kernels are now again a full game up in the West Division standings at 30-17.
Gipson-Long needed just 69 pitches to get through his 6.0 innings of work, scattering three hits and a pair of walks while allowing the lone run. He struck out three batters and worked at a 72.7% first-pitch strike rate, keeping the ball on the ground at a 58.8% clip to earn his fourth win of the season.
Anthony Prato led off the game with a double, later scoring on a Fedko infield single. Severino scalded an RBI triple into right-center to plate Fedko, drawing an errant throw from the cutoff man to cross home for a little league home run in his first AB back off the IL.
Back-to-back two-out singles by Fedko and Soularie in the third preceded a towering three-run homer off the bat of Soularie, making it 6-0 Kernels. Fedko opened the fifth inning with a solo shot to right, then Soularie singled and stole second before crossing home on a Pat Winkel RBI single.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand doubled to lead off the sixth, later scoring on a bases-loaded walk issued to Soularie. Winkel closed out the Kernels' scoring with a sacrifice fly to right.
Orlando Rodriguez and Ryan Shreve finished things out on the bump for CR.
Game three of the series is set for a 7:05 pm ET start on Thursday evening in Lansing.
