New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - Kyle Gibson turned in a solid start and the bullpen managed to hold a slim lead as the Rock Cats downed Trenton, 3-1 before a crowd of 5,286 on Kids' Opening Day on Wednesday afternoon.

Trenton's Austin Romine put the Thunder on the board with an RBI double in the top of the third for a 1-0 advantage. The Rock Cats were held scoreless by Trenton starting pitcher Andrew Brackman until the fifth inning. Jair Fernandez started the inning off by reaching base on a walk. Mark Dolenc followed with a double to right that moved Fernandez to third. A throwing error by second baseman Justin Snyder to third allowed both Fernandez and Dolenc to score to put the Rock Cats ahead, 2-1. Chris Parmelee added an RBI double in the inning.

Gibson (5-3) limited the Thunder to one run on five hits through 6 2/3 innings. Loek Van Mil allowed three hits in 1 1/3 innings out of the bullpen, but he managed to keep the Thunder off the board. Billy Bullock notched his second save of the season - and second in as many days - with a scoreless ninth.

Brackman (5-3) suffered the loss despite tossing a solid five innings in which he allowed three runs on three hits.
