Knoxville Smokies News Release
JACKSON, TNÂ Â -Â Â The Tennessee Smokies lost two games to the Jackson Generals on Monday night in Jackson. The Generals held a 4-3 lead after three innings of a game that began on April 15, but it was suspended due to inclement weather. Jackson went on to win the completion of that game by a score of 10-7 and finished the evening with a 2-1 win over the Smokies.
Jackson added to their previously-held 4-3 lead by scoring one run in the fourth and three in the fifth to make it 8-3. The Smokies responded in the bottom of the sixth inning when Charcer Burks hit a sac fly that scored Trey Martin. Jason Vosler doubled in Vimael Machin later in the inning to pull Tennessee within three. Zack Short attempted to score on the play, but he was thrown out at home plate to end the threat.
The Smokies continued to claw back in the seventh inning when Martin doubled home Ian Rice to cut the deficit to just two runs. Machin followed with an RBI-single that brought Martin home and made it an 8-7 game. The Generals added two runs in the eighth to pull away.
Michael Rucker pitched the first three innings of the game on April 15, so he was given the loss in the contest. Scott Effross, Ryan McNeil, and James Norwood each threw two innings of relief work in the resumption of the game on Monday. Effross allowed four runs on six hits, while McNeil pitched two innings in which he did not give up a hit. Norwood gave up the final two runs of the game in the eighth inning.
In the second game of the evening, Jackson once again scored first, as the Generals took a 2-0 lead on a throwing error. Eddy Martinez got the Smokies on the board with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, scoring Martin on the play and making it a 2-1 contest. Vosler led the Smokies with a 2-for-4 game at the plate.
Trevor Clifton started on the mound for Tennessee. Clifton pitched 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks. He also struck out four. Craig Brooks relieved Clifton and threw a scoreless sixth inning. Brooks did not allow a run and struck out two batters.
The Smokies and Generals will play again at 7:05 p.m. ET on Tuesday. Tennessee's Duncan Robinson (2-1, 3.88 ERA) will face off against Jackson's Bo Takahashi (0-0, 6.35 ERA) in the starting pitching matchup.
