MARIETTA, GA - The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs are proud to announce that Birmingham Barons OF Eloy Jimenez has been named the Southern League Player of the Month for May.
Jimenez is currently on a 13-game hitting streak for the Barons, tied for the second longest mark in the Southern League this year. The 21-year-old native of the Dominican Republic already owns the longest hitting streak in the league this season; posting a hit in 15 consecutive contests from April 26 to May 11.
Across the month of May, Jimenez led the Southern League in a number of offensive categories including OPS (1.082), hits (40), extra-base hits (18), total bases (71), doubles (11), and slugging percentage (.664). He also ranked among the league leaders with six home runs (T-3rd) and 25 RBIs (2nd).
Despite starting the season on the disabled list, Jimenez ranks among the 2018 Southern League leaders in home runs (10, T-2nd), RBI (39, 2nd), extra-base hits (25, T-3rd), and total bases (102, 3rd). Having appeared in 41 games for Birmingham thus far, Jimenez leads the circuit with a .614 slugging percentage and ranks fifth among qualified Southern League hitters with a .331 batting average this year.
Through 59 total Southern League games split between this year and the 2017 season, Jimenez has posted a .338/.380/.598 slash line with 13 total homers and 46 RBIs.
Acquired by the Chicago White Sox last July as part of a trade that sent LHP Jose Quintana to the Chicago Cubs, Jimenez is currently listed as the White Sox no. 1 prospect and the no. 3 overall prospect in baseball according to MLB Pipeline.
Jimenez was named the Southern League Player of the Week on May 6, and recently received the White Sox Minor League Player of the Month award as voted on by a panel of Chicago-area media members.
