Oshawa Generals News Release
The Generals wrapped up the preseason tonight in a matchup against the Peterborough Petes. The Generals were looking for redemption, following a 5-2 loss to the Petes on Thursday. Fans piled into Pickering Recreation Complex for the 6:05 p.m. puck drop.
The game was evenly matched, with both teams spending a fair amount of time in their opponent's end. Liam Devine started tonight's game and played for the first two periods. It was Peterborough who opened the scoring at only 26 seconds into the first period. The goal came from Hunter Garlent, assisted by Vladimirov and Timleck. The Generals quickly retailiated as first round pick, Cliff Pu scored at 2:47, assisted by Aidan Wallace. Wallace put up his second point of the game a short time later when he scored at 8:05, jointly assisted by Stillman and Turner. Michael Clarke was the next to score, ending the first period tied 2-2.
This evenly matched game would continue into the second period. The Petes put up a goal at 2:50, scored unassisted by MacDonald on a Petes power play. The Gens would also find an opportunity on the power play, as Manchurek dumped the puck in at 8:55, again tying the game. Later in the period, the Petes led the Generals 4-3 thanks to a goal from Stefano at 18:27. Cliff Pu was granted a penalty shot with less than a minute to go in the second period, but unfortunately couldn't get it past Petes goaltender, Scott Smith.
The third period saw a lot more tension between the two teams and things got chippy on the ice causing Latour and Garlent to both take five minutes in the penalty box for unsportsmanlike behaviour. A short time later, Manchurek and Lizotte both dropped the gloves and were removed from the game for fighting as per exhibition game rules. The Generals weren't ready to give up the fight and at 9:36, Riley Stillman tied the game on a Generals power play, assisted by Pu and Carlisle.
The final minutes of regulation time were a nail biter for anyone in the crowd as the Generals had 40 seconds of 5 on 3 play. Unfortunately they couldn't capitalize on any chances during the power play and the buzzer sounded with the score tied 4-4. Players got ready for a shootout with Lorentz, Ang, and Timleck shooting for Peterborough, and Cirelli and Pu taking the only shots for the Generals. Cliff Pu would be the only player to find the back of the net, winning the game for the Generals 5-4. Jeremy Brodeur would also help to secure the win for the Generals as he took over in goal for the third period and the shootout. The Generals won all of their preseason games at home - thanks to all of our fans who came to cheer the team on!
This game wraps up the preseason and also marks two weeks until our 2014-15 season home opener, taking place on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 6:05 p.m. This memorable night will also feature the retirement of John Tavares' number, 91.
