Generals Have Huge Weekend at NHL Draft

St. Paul, Minnesota - The Oshawa Generals made their presence known at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft on Friday and Saturday with five Generals being selected by NHL teams during the seven round draft.

Nicklas Jensen was the top Generals player selected when he was picked by the Vancouver Canucks in the first round 29th overall. Last season, the native of Herning, Denmark scored 29 goals and 29 assists for 58 points in 61 regular season games in Oshawa.

A pair of Generals didn't have to wait long to hear their names called on day two of the draft as both Boone Jenner and Lucas Lessio were both selected in the 2nd round.

Jenner become the Columbus Blue Jackets top pick in the draft at 37th overall after they traded their first round pick to Philadelphia earlier in the week for a former OHL'er in Jeff Carter. A native of Dorchester, Ontario, Jenner scored 25 goals and 41 for 66 points in 63 games and served as an assistant captain for the Generals.

Lessio became the first Generals player since Brett MacLean (2007) to be selected by the Phoenix Coyotes with both being 2nd round selections for the team. The 56th overall selection in the draft, Lessio scored 27 goals and 27 assists for 54 points in 66 games with the Generals last season.

One of the great stories for the Generals on Saturday was the selection of Andy Andreoff in the 3rd round by the Los Angeles Kings. Andreoff had been passed over in his first two years of eligibility for the draft but after a breakout season this year he became the 80th overall pick in the draft. The native of Pickering, Ontario scored 33 goals and 42 assists for 75 points in 66 regular season games this year.

The Generals also saw one of their premier defencemen selected when the Philadelphia Flyers selected Colin Suellentrop in the 4th round, 116th overall. Known for being a shut-down defender, Suellentrop a native of Plantation, Florida scored 14 points in 59 games this past season and led all Generals blueliners with a +21 plus/minus rating.

By the conclusion of the Draft more Generals players were selected in the draft the any other team in the Ontario Hockey League and tied for the most from any one team with the QMJHL's Saint John Sea Dogs.

Also of note were two former Generals draft picks that were selected in the NHL Draft.

Generals 2nd round pick in 2009 Tyler Biggs was selected in the 1st round, 22nd overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs while Generals 7th round selection in 2009 Patrick Koudys was selected in the 5th round 147th overall by the Washington Capitals.
