Oshawa Generals News Release
The Generals began their weekend tonight at home against the Hamilton Bulldogs. Entering the game, the Gens held a 19-10-2-0 record after a clutch overtime victory over the Kitchener Rangers on the road on Tuesday night. The team looked to grab another two points tonight against their division rivals and start off the weekend on the right foot.
1st Period:
The Gens opened the game with a strong bout of pressure on the Bulldogs, trapping them in their own end and drawing a tripping penalty. With the first powerplay of the game, the Gens capitalized on the chance with a beautiful shot from Anthony Salinitri that rung off the post and into the net, putting the Gens up 1-0. Shortly after the goal, Oshawa's newly acquired goalie Aidan Hughes made an amazing save on a chance from in front of the net to preserve the Generals lead. Hughes continued his impressive play as he made a flurry of stops just a minute later. Building off the saves, the Gens made the Bulldogs pay for a turnover in their end, with Danil Antropov picking off the puck behind the net and passing it in front to Eric Henderson who buried the 2-0 goal. The Gens kept up their dominant pressure through the halfway mark of the period, generating lots of shots and offensive zone time. With seven minutes remaining in the period, Oshawa took their first penalty of the game but managed to kill it off with a strong PK effort. Keeping up their hard forecheck and strong defensive play for the remainder of the period, the Gens carried their 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
2nd Period:
The Gens began the period with a powerplay off a roughing call to Hamilton at the end of the first. While the Gens had a good cycle going on the powerplay, they weren't able to put one past the Bulldogs, keeping the game at 2-0. Five minutes into the period, Nick Wong shot the puck into Hamilton's net, but the play was called no goal due to a slashing penalty taken just before Wong scored. With strong defense and some key saves from Hughes, the Gens were able to kill the resulting penalty to hold onto their lead. However, just after Wong left the box, the Gens took another penalty to put them down a man again. Continuing their penalty killing efforts, the Gens managed to kill off another penalty and stay up by two. After the kill, Hughes made yet another incredible save after doing the splits to get across the crease and deny a Hamilton wraparound attempt. Just past the halfway point of the period, the Gens got a powerplay of their own after the Bulldogs were called for a high-stick. Keeping up his impressive powerplay performance, Anthony Salinitri sniped his second goal of the night, giving the Gens a commanding 3-0 lead. The Gens weren't done there, as Kyle MacLean potted Oshawa's fourth of the game off an amazing backhand pass from Danil Antopov with just four minutes left in the second. After the goal, Generals defenseman Joseph Rupoli dropped the gloves with Bulldogs defenseman DJ King. With Oshawa getting called for the extra two minutes on the play, the Bulldogs received a powerplay that saw them get their first goal of the night. The period would end shortly after the goal, with the Gens leading 4-1 heading into the final frame of the game.
3rd Period:
The Gens came out for the third hungry for more goals, with Anthony Salinitri burying his hattrick tally off an amazing shot on a breakaway to increase Oshawa's lead to 5-1 and send the hats flying onto the ice. After the goal, Oshawa kept up their strong offensive zone pressure, generating the majority of the time on attack in the first half of the third. Being rewarded again for their efforts, a shot from Cole Resnick beat the Bulldogs goaltender for the sixth time of the night, giving Resnick his second goal of the season. With their offense rolling, the Gens showed no signs of slowing down after potting another goal off a one-timer from Danil Antropov for his fourth point of the night to give them a whopping 7-1 lead. With just five minutes left in the game, Hamilton got called for a slashing penalty to put Oshawa on the man advantage. While the Gens couldn't score on the powerplay, they were able to finish off the game with their massive 7-1 lead and come away with a huge victory over the Hamilton Bulldogs.
After a big win tonight in an offensive explosion, the team will look to keep their streak rolling as they battle the Niagara IceDogs on the road on Saturday and then return home to tackle the Guelph Storm on Sunday.
