Gems Lose Tight Game 1-0
November 5, 2010 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Dayton Gems News Release
Dayton, OH- Entering tonight's contest with the Colorado Eagles, the Gems were looking to extend their winning streak to four games and with a win, tie Colorado for first place in the Turner Conference Standings. Early on the Gems dictated the pace of play in the first period by registering a season-high 15 shots on Eagles starting goaltender Kyle Jones. Not only did the Gems out play the Eagles in shots, they controlled the ice for a majority of the period. Despite being out played, the Eagles found a way to generate 12 shots on goal, but Gems starter Jeff Jakaitis matched Jones and stopped them all (including a miraculous save on a penalty shot) to keep the game scoreless after 20 minutes.
The story of the second period would change and the cards were flipped as the Eagles finished the second outshooting Dayton 17-9 in shots on goal. In the midst of the entourage of shots, the Eagles were awarded a two-man advantage just under seven minutes into the second and Daymen Rycroft gave Colorado the first lead at 1-0 at the 13:51 mark. Jones's hot play continued when he stopped a five-on-three power play for the Gems with just over two minutes left in the second to keep the game at 1-0 heading into the final period of regulation.
Defense would continue to be the theme in the third period and early on both teams played shut-down style hockey to alleviate some of the pressure of the goaltenders. The two teams combined for only 11 total shots in the third. Throughout the night there were a lot of whistles and a total of 14 combined power plays, unfortunately for the Gems, they could not convert on any of their seven chances in the game. Jakaitis was again outstanding stopping 31 of 32 shots, but Jones had the Dayton's number on this night and stopped all 30 shots to become the first netminder to shutout the Gems this season, as the Gems would lose a close one in the 1-0 defeat.
The two teams will lace them up again tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. The game will also be the first and only KIDS EAT FREE NIGHT of the season. All children (ages 12 and under) will receive a voucher for a free regular-sized hot dog, small pop and small popcorn.
