Quad City Mallards News Release
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Damian Surma scored his third goal of the game with just 7.4 seconds left in the third period to give the host Evansville IceMen a wild 6-5 win over the the Quad City Mallards Friday night.
Surma capped off his hat trick by completing Evansville's comeback from a 5-3 third period deficit with a shot from the right wing circle. It was Surma who triggered the third period rally by trimming the Mallard lead to 5-4 with a drive from the slot at 8:03. Joe Grimaldi tied the score at five with a shot from the point that was deflected past Mallard goaltender David Brown at the 16:32 mark.
The Mallards had strung together three straight goals of their own earlier in the third. Quad City was down 3-2 until Mike McLean converted a rebound just under two minutes into the third. Obi Aduba then scored twice in thirty seconds to quickly create a two goal Mallard lead. Aduba finished a 2-on-1 at 6:59 and jammed in the puck from the doorstep at 7:29.
The Iceman also rallied from a two goal deficit earlier in the evening. After Surma pounced on a rebound to cut what had been a 2-0 Mallard advantage in half at 15:18 of the first period, the IceMen would take the lead with a pair of second period goals. Grimaldi fired the equalizer in off the post at 5:25. With just 54 seconds left in the second Nick Schneider put the IceMen on top for the first time with a wrist shot from the slot.
The Mallards built a 2-0 first period lead on goals from Jason Kostadine, who buried a Brandon Marino feed from close range at 9:02, and Mike McLean, who wristed the puck home from the right wing circle just under two minutes later.
The Mallards will team with Genesis Health System and Cumulus Media in association with KWQC HD and The Dispatch Argus to support breast cancer awareness with "Pink in the Rink Night" when the Mallards take on the Bloomington PrairieThunder Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at the i wireless Center. $2 from every ticket sold for Pink in the Rink Night will be donated to the Geneses Health Services Foundation.
