16 Round Shootout Highlights Bees' Victory Over Odessa
November 5, 2010 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees and Odessa Jackalopes played 65 minutes of hockey with neither team able to take advantage; ending tied 4-4. The two teams then went head to head for five rounds of a shootout. Still tied. Another five rounds. Still tied. Another five rounds. Still tied!
It was not until the 16th round of the shootout that the Killer Bees were finally able to grab victory and earn the two points as Brett Wilson scored what proved to be the winning goal.
Odessa opened the game by scoring the first goal of the game in the second period. Odessa would add to their second period lead when Dominic Leveille scored a penalty shot goal at 15:52 of the second.
The outlook looked brim for the Killer Bees as the second period was nearing a close but a power-play strike by Zak McClellan cut the lead in half. Kyle Radke had the puck on the near side post and moved it to McClellan in front of the net who deked Jackalopes goalie Michel Robinson to score.
The Jacks wasted little time responding scoring a power-play goal of their own just a bit over two minutes later as Todd Robinson had a deflected shot beat Pagliero.
Just six seconds later Tomas Klempa beat a surprised Robinson to bring the lead back down to one goal. The goal was scored at the 19:42 mark of the second period with Sean Muncy picking up the assist.
The Killer Bees would complete the comeback in the third period when Aaron Lewicki scored his second goal of the season, once again on the power-play. Brandon Smith took the puck around the back of the net and let a shot rip from the far side post. Robinson made initial save but Lewicki picked up the rebound and scored.
Kyle Radke provided the first Killer Bees lead of the game at the 13:26 mark of the third with the Bees third power-play goal of the evening. Rio Grande went 3-8 with the man advantage against the struggling Odessa penalty-kill.
Odessa would force overtime with a power-play strike of their own at the 15:59 mark of the third. As the game came to a close Odessa had two shorthanded breakaways to win the game but were unable to score.
Through overtime neither team was able to garner a major advantage and the game would proceed to a shootout.
The Jacks made two of their first three shootout goals to take a commanding 2-0 lead after the first three Bees skaters missed. Tomas Klempa and Aaron Lee would score on the fourth and fifth attempts to tie the shootout at two after Pagliero made the save on both Odessa shooters.
The next ten skaters for each team would not be able to find the twine, finally in the sixteenth round of the shootout Brett Wilson scored to give the Bees the lead.
Jeff Pierce had to score for Odessa and drove towards the net but Juliano Pagliero made a glove save to give the Bees the extra point.
The two teams would battle again Saturday night at State Farm Arena. Puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
