Dayton Gems News Release

DAYTON, OH - When the Dayton Gems took on Fort Wayne on Saturday night, a lot of local hockey fans expected the game to be extra exciting.

The Gems were coming off an overtime loss to Bloomington and had loss to Fort Wayne in a shootout the previous week.

For the 2,653 in attendance - the largest crowd at Hara Arena this season - the game was almost everything they could have hoped for.

The Gems took 41 shots at the goal - their most of the season - and played great defense throughout the game. Goaltender Jeff Jakaitis recorded 31 saves on the evening and allowed just two shots past him all night.

The only disappointment for Dayton's fans was the final score, a 2-1 loss.

The loss is the third straight for the Gems. It's also the third straight loss to Fort Wayne.

It didn't take long for the Komets to score in the matchup. Just 4:22 into the game, Colin Chaulk was able to slip one past Jakaitis and take a 1-0 lead.

The game would stay that way into the second period when Dayton's Ernie Stewart was able to knot the game up at 1-1. Stewart's goal was scored after just 1:06 had passed on the clock. He was assisted on the play by teammate Tom Boudreau.

Both teams played great defense in the second period and kept the score at 1-1 until the third period.

Only a few minutes ticked off the clock in the third when Fort Wayne regained the lead on a P.C. Drouin goal. The goal put the Komets ahead 2-1, which turned out to be the final score.

Dayton (16-13-3) will have the next few days off for the All-Star break. The Gems will play again on Friday, December 14 against Bloomington. The home game at Hara Arena will start at 7:30 p.m.

The Kettering Medical Center is proud to be the official title sponsor of the Gems for the 2010-11 season.
