Eagles Blowout 'Bugs in Colorado
January 8, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
LOVELAND, CO - Andrew Penner stopped 26 shots and the Colorado Eagles controlled the special teams on their way to a 6-1 win over the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs Saturday night at the Budweiser Events Center. The âBugs, who hadn't lost by more than four goals since last year's season opener, fall to 21-12-1 the loss heading into the CHL All-Star break.
Jim Jorgensen netted the lone goal for Bossier-Shreveport, who converted just one of eight powerplays in the contest. Colorado scored three times on the powerplay however, and were led by two goals and two assists from Steve Haddon.
Colorado killed off three early Mudbugs powerplays in the first period to gain momentum until they broke through with a Steve Haddon goal on their own powerplay at 14:24. The Mudbugs tied the game less than two minutes later with a powerplay goal when Jim Jorgensen one-timed a David Rutherford pass into the net to even the score at 1-1. The Eagles took a 2-1 lead into the locker room however after Joe Grimaldi beat Brian Foster through a screen right off a faceoff at 17:33.
Colorado peppered Foster with a season-high 19 shots in the second period and scored twice to extend the lead. First it was reigning league MVP Kevin Ulanski slipping a backhander through Foster's five-hole from the slot and then Daymen Rycroft ripped a perfect shot into the top corner off a Ulanski pass with 1:59 left to put the Eagles up 4-1 after 40 minutes.
The âBugs hopes of a comeback were squashed in the third period after James DeLory received a fighting major and an instigator penalty while Grimaldi received just two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct. Two more powerplay goals by Riley Nelson and Haddon on the ensuing five-minute powerplay then put the game out of reach for Bossier-Shreveport.
Brian Foster (8-6-0) stopped 35 Colorado shots in the loss, while Andrew Penner (7-6-0) continued his success against the âBugs with only one goal against. The Eagles finished 3 for 6 on the powerplay and outshot the Mudbugs 41-27.
The Mudbugs will now have five days off as the CHL pauses for it's 2011 All-Star Game, which comes up on Wednesday from Rapid City, South Dakota. The game features the defending Champion Rush take on a team of CHL All-Stars including Mudbugs center David Rutherford.
The âBugs will then get back in action with two more road games next weekend against the Allen Americans on Friday and the Tulsa Oilers on Saturday. Log on to the broadcast schedule page at www.mudbugshockey.com for radio broadcast information. Both games will also be shown live online on CHL-TV.
