Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz.- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (14-19-3) were unable to find the equalizer throughout their hard fought game against the Arizona Sundogs (15-15-4) on Saturday night as the âDogs won 6-3. Special teams were a different maker in the game as each side allowed three power-play strikes.
Arizona came out firing scoring the first three goals of the game, the first two in the first four minutes. Patrick Schafer gave the âDogs a 1-0 lead just 37 seconds into the game after a face-off win by Arizona. Pagliero made the initial save but Schafer was there for the rebound.
At 3:21 Arizona took a 2-0 lead with a Luke Erickson strike and assists to Cam Keith and John Wessbecker. Erickson's shot rang off the inside of the post to find the back of the net.
At 12:38 of the first a melee broke free with multiple players dropping the gloves. After a pair of hard hits against Brett Wilson by Corey Laurysen that Killer Bees defenseman Matt Smyth took exception to the fights broke out. Matt Smyth would be ejected from the game.
The Killer Bees would have a scoring opportunity in the first period as Nick Sucharksi was taken down on his way to the net and was awarded a penalty shot. On the penalty shot Sucharski came straight at Levente Szuper and attempted to go five-hole but Szuper closed the door.
In the second period Arizona would score the first goal of the frame 1:14 into the period. Jason Williams picked up the goal that once again went off the post, as Kyle Hood and Jamie VanderVeeken added the helpers.
The Killer Bees would rally for two straight power-play goals in the second. Jake Obermeyer broke the shutout at 6:37 of the second with a slap shot from the top of the near side circle. Nick Sucharkski added the assist.
Zak McClellan cut the âDogs lead to one goal at 11:24 when he stuffed in a wrap-around attempt. Aaron Lewicki controlled the puck behind the net and as the Arizona defense challenged him dropped the puck off to McClellan who drove towards the front of the net and beat Levente Szuper.
Arizona would add a power-play strike of their own before the second period horn would sound to increase the lead to two goals once again. Kyle Hood kept a Bees clearing attempt in the zone and fired a shot towards the net right as Cam Keith was crossing the slot. Keith got a stick on the puck beating Pagliero.
In the third period the Bees would get one back before a pair of Arizona goals would seal the victory for the Sundogs. Jake Obermeyer scored his second goals of the net, once again on the power play at 3:54 of the third. Brett Clouthier and Zak McClellan picked up the two assists.
The Killer Bees return to action next Friday night taking on the Bucks in Laredo at 7:30 p.m. The Bees travel to the Texas Brahmas the next evening at the NYTEX Sports Centre. The Bees return to the State Farm Arena on January 21 hosting the Allen Americans.
After cutting the lead to one once again the Sundogs would increase the lead to two. Luke Erickson registered a power-play tally at 5:48 and Jason Visser would ice the game at 15:50 with a strike from the top of the circles.
