Carolina Mudcats News Release
ZEBULON, NC - Ryan Gebhardt came through with his second walk-off hit in four nights as the Mudcats defeated the Lynchburg Hillcats 4-3 in front of a crowd of 5,932 at Five County Stadium on Friday night.
Gebhardt was 1-for-3 with his lone hit coming off Lynchburg (22-12) reliever Cole Sulser (1-1, 4.15) in the ninth and counting for Carolina's third walk-off hit in their last four games.
The Mudcats (15-18) led first on Friday night after getting a run on back-to-back two-out doubles in the first from Joey Meneses and Joseph Odom. Meneses also brought the Mudcats back into the game with a two-run home run that tied the game at 3-3.
Meneses was 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs batted in and a double. His first inning double stretched his hitting streak to a career best 17 straight games. The streak is the longest this season for the Mudcats and the third longest in the Carolina League in 2016.
Odom also had two hits and was 2-or-4 in the Carolina victory. He started the ninth inning rally with a one out single off Sulser and was immediately pinch ran for by Stephen Gaylor. Braxton Davidson moved Gaylor to third in the ninth with a broken bat single to right and Gebhardt brought him with a single to right in front of a diving attempt from Mike Papi. Davidson was also 2-for-4 in the Carolina victory.
Raymar Navarro (2-1, 3.86) pitched the final two innings for the Mudcats and earned the series opening victory out of the bullpen. Zack Bird turned in one of his best appearances of the season by working through a scoreless sixth and seventh.
Wes Parsons started for the Mudcats and allowed three runs (two earned) over five innings. Parsons did not walk a batter and struck out four in his second start of the season.
Luis Lugo started for the Hillcats and worked through five and 1/3 innings while allowing two runs and three hits. He also walked two and struck out five in a no-decision. Cameron Hill suffered a blown save after giving up the Meneses home run in the sixth. He allowed one inherited runner to score and one of his own over an inning and 2/3 out of the pen.
Greg Allen scored twice and was 1-for-4 in the game for the Hillcats. Yu-Cheng Chang was 2-for-4 with a run batted in and Mike Papi was 2-for-3. Lynchburg was 3-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base in the loss. The Mudcats had just two hits with runners in scoring position (2-for-6) and left four men on.
The victory put the Mudcats out in front at 1-0 in the four game series. Game two is scheduled for Saturday night at 5:00 p.m. in Zebulon. RHP Matt Withrow (1-2, 3.32) will start for the Mudcats in game two and RHP Julian Merryweather (4-1, 0.73) will start for the Hillcats.
