Swift Current Broncos News Release
The Swift Current Broncos recovered nicely on Sunday afternoon to return to the win column, utilizing their special teams to power their way to an 8-0 shutout win over the Edmonton Oil Kings.
Matteo Gennaro lit the lamp for the Broncos first goal, wheeling across the faceoff circle before rifling a high wrist shot by goaltender Josh Dechaine on a Swift Current power play.
Then on a rare occurrence, the Broncos were awarded a penalty shot after an Oil Kings defender covered the puck in the Edmonton crease on a scramble play. It paid off as the 20-year-old team captain made a nice deke from in close to increase his club's lead to 2-0.
Swift Current was shorthanded three times in the opening frame but the penalty kill was efficient in going 3/3, maintaining a 2-0 score heading to the second period.
Sahvan Khaira increased the Broncos lead to 3-0 as his wrist shot from the point had eyes and went off the far post and in. It took only 20 second from the moment the puck dropped for Khaira to notch his sixth of the season.
The Broncos poured it on as Tyler Steenbergen executed a little pivot move from in close and followed that with a goal to make it 4-0. Beck Malenstyn earned the lone assist after knocking down an Oil Kings clearing attempt and finding Steenbergen alone in front.
Gawdin followed that by scoring his second of the afternoon and 54th of the season on an outstanding shorthanded rush involving himself and Malenstyn. The goal capped off a three-goal second period and it was 5-0 Broncos to go along with a 31-15 shots on goal margin.
Khaira took a penalty for roughing 11 second into the third period but the penalty kill units remained solid. Gawdin forced a turnover in Oil Kings territory and this time set up Malenstyn for yet another shorthanded goal.
Rookie blue liner Connor Horning made an outstanding individual play to dance towards the slot area from the point and slid a low backhander by Dechaine to give the Broncos a large 7-0 margin.
Steenbergen added his second goal late in the contest amongst a series of penalties over the last 10 minutes from both teams, including a fighting major from the Broncos' Max Patterson and the Oil Kings' Brayden Gorda.
Broncos goaltender and Edmonton, AB native Stuart Skinner was flawless in turning aside 20 shots to notch his sixth shutout of the season.
