Silvertips Take Tight Battle with Seattle

February 25, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Everett Silvertips News Release

KENT, Wash. - Connor Dewar and Garrett Pilon scored in the second and third period in another intense battle to the finish, and the Everett Silvertips edged the Seattle Thunderbirds in a 2-1 victory before 5,452 fans at accesso ShoWare Center on Saturday night in WHL action.

Dewar logged a multi point night for the Silvertips and has six goals in eight games against the Thunderbirds, while Pilon's goal, a highlight reel dangle move in the third period, broke a 1-1 tie. Carter Hart turned in a 23 save effort and the Tips earned their second straight victory in Kent, also extending their streak to points picked up in 11 straight games (9-0-1-1).

UP NEXT: The Tips return home on Sunday, 4:05 pm to host the Spokane Chiefs at Angel of the Winds Arena for Mascot Mania presented by Polar Bear Solutions. Tickets are on sale at www.everettsilvertips.com/ticketcentral.

The first period saw a lot of sustained pressure in the Thunderbird zone by the Silvertips. There were plenty of grade-A opportunities to get the puck into the back of the net by Liam Hughes came up big for the Thunderbirds and made 14 saves through the first 20 minutes of play.

Nolan Volcan broke the scoreless tie for the Thunderbirds at 14:18 of the first period, finishing a wrister into a half open net from the right side.

The second period was dominated by the Silvertips, outshooting Seattle 14-3, and they were once again able to keep a majority of the play in the Thunderbirds' zone. Shortly after an attempt on the man advantage, Connor Dewar was able to bury a rebound past Liam Hughes at even strength to tie the game; Bajkov and Fonteyne were credited with the assists.

The second half of the period was quite scrappy between the two teams and there was a near line brawl that took place at the 17:26. Both teams received 3 roughing penalties each and the penalty boxes were filled to the brim.

The third period settled down for both teams as they kept the scrums to a minimum in the first half of the period, playing a complete 200 foot game. Seattle increased their pressure in the third period and had more time in the Everett zone, but Carter Hart remained sharp.

Garrett Pilon got the game winner as he patiently stickhandled through a stationed Seattle defense and his bid trickled past Hughes to make it 2-1 at 2:44; Dewar and Sutter were credited with the assists.

Seattle had their first and only power play of the evening, but came up empty handed. With less than two minutes in the third, Dewar and Strand went off for roughing and it was 4-on-4 briefly until Seattle pulled the goaltender for the extra attacker. Despite Seattle's effort, they were unable to get a good opportunity in the last minute and Everett won a big game in Kent by the score of 2-1.

Hart's counterpart, Liam Hughes, made 37 saves.
