February 25, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Kootenay Ice News Release
The Kootenay ICE Hockey Club and Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), Kootenays Branch are teaming up on a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of mental health during the upcoming ICE home game.
The ICE game on Wednesday, February 28 at 7 p.m. will have a CMHA-run kiosk setup to help answer questions and to raise awareness about mental health and who it affects.
This event comes after ICE Governor Greg Fettes presented the CMHA, Kootenays Branch with a cheque for $25,000 on February 16.
The awareness campaign is part of the ongoing commitment by the Kootenay ICE and CMHA Kootenays Branch to implement Talk Today. Talk Today provides mental health support to players and raises awareness about mental health throughout communities across the Western Hockey League.
A key piece of the Talk Today program has been to educate players about mental health and encouraging positive conversation. Every team has received mental health training specific. Each team is also now linked to a CMHA Mental Health Coach, who provides support and mental health resources to individuals in need.
"Our aim at Canadian Mental Health Association for the Kootenays is to help young athletes connect with mental health supports and resources they need to thrive. Good overall health includes good mental health," explained Carey Fraser, Executive Director, Canadian Mental Health Association for the Kootenays.
"Our partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association for the Kootenays is a priority," said Matt Cockell, President and General Manager. "We are excited to invest in a relationship that has such a positive impact on the well being of the community."
Tickets for Wednesday's game are still available. For ticket information, head to ICEcountry.ca, stop by the ICE Gear Store at Western Financial Place or call 250-417-0322.
