Gauld scores twice, but 'Caps bow out of Canadian Championship

Vancouver Whitecaps FC News Release
LANGFORD, BC - Ryan Gauld continued his strong play for Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Thursday night, but it wasn't enough to beat provincial rival Pacific FC in their Canadian Championship tie.
Gauld, starting his first game for Whitecaps FC, notched a brace, but four goals from the Tridents meant the home team claimed victory in a thrilling contest.
Terran Campbell, one of five starters for Pacific FC from the Whitecaps FC BMO Academy System, opened the scoring in the eighth minute on a penalty kick.
Gauld then scored his first goal on the tail of a bizarre run of play in the 14th minute. Pacific FC goalkeeper Callum Irving came forward to snatch a long pass, but a collision with 'Caps forward Brian White saw the ball come loose. Gauld jumped on the gift and delivered a deft chip into the open net with Irving still flat on the pitch.
That goal made the score line 1-1, but it wasn't until Pacific had found two more tallies that Gauld doubled his total. Left unmarked in the box, Gauld was on the receiving end of a Cristian Dájome cross. The Scot made no mistake with his header and the 'Caps had life again with 25 minutes to play.
Alas, Pacific FC, empowered by a raucous home crowd, proved an impassioned side to beat.
The 'Caps looked primed for an equalizer, but an Alejandro Diaz tap in off a free kick sealed the visitors' fate 10 minutes later.
Dájome cut the deficit once more in the eighth minute of stoppage time, as he pounced on his own rebound after a saved penalty, but his kick was the last of the game.
It's a short turnaround for Whitecaps FC, who will host their former tenants Real Salt Lake on Sunday night at 7 p.m. at BC Place.
