Lafayette, LA- Warren Peters scored a hat trick and rookie all star Frank Doyle stopped 31 shots for his 4th shut out of the season, as the Idaho Steelheads completed their two game sweep of the IceGators, winning 6-0, Thursday night in the Cajundome.
The Steelheads took a 2-0 lead after the first period as Idaho capitalized on several odd man rushes. At 8:18, a perfect 2 on 1 with Warren Peters and Frank Lukes resulted in a give and go and a wide open goal by Peters, his 16th and a 1-0 Idaho lead. Peters would make it 2-0 at 13:30, as a Gataor turnover at the blue line resulted in a breakaway. Peters beat Nathan Marsters with a tight in wrist shot for his 22nd goal and a 2-0 score. Lance Galbraith getting assists on both 1st period markers.
The Steelheads increased their lead to 3-0 at 2:35 of the 2nd period, when Bobby Russell lifted a backhander to the top shelf for his 23rd of the season. The veteran sniper was left alone in front of the Gators net, getting the puck from the combination of Brett Draney and Mike Stutzel.
Peters (18) completed his hat trick with a rebound backhander at 5:38 of the 3rd period. Idaho added goals by Dan Vandermeer (6) and Matt Elich (11) to make the final score 6-0. With the loss, Louisiana's record is now 20-34-6, 46 points and 5th place in the South. The Gators were outshot by Idaho 36-31. Power plays were 0-4 for the Gators and 2-2 for the Steelheads.
The IceGators next game is Saturday night, March 19, when the Gators take on the Victoria Salmon Kings at 7:05pm CST. The game will be available on 960am "The Gator", on the internet at www.icegators.com and a videocast is available through the B2 Network and the team website.
