Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Beaumont, TX â Apparently the date has been circled on the calendar in the Texas Wildcatters dressing room for at least a couple of weeks now, the first visit of the Salmon Kings to Beaumont, Texas.
Head Coach Bryan Maxwell said of the St. Patrick's Day match-up, "I don't care about what day, what team, or building that we are playing we need to come prepared to win every night."
The Salmon Kings started the game on their heels. At 3:21 of the first period the few Wildcatters faithful were brought to their feet when Mark Giannetti scored from Ryan Fultz and Grant MacNeil. Then at 15:05 they let their seats get cold again, when John Snowden wired a powerplay marker beating goaltender Jaime McCaig sending Texas to the dressing room with the 2-0 lead.
At the intermission Maxwell must have read the Salmon Kings the riot act because they came back on the ice with fire. Irishman Ryan Finnerty back in the line-up carried the puck across the goal line sending the one Salmon Kings faithful to his feet. Then before he was able to sit back down, only 1:10 later, Seth Leonard ripped a shot from the slot past goaltender Davis Parley to tie the game at 2.
With 2:30 left in the period newcomer Scott Borders took a nice pass from Brad Dexter in behind the Wildcatters defense and he beat Parley to send the Salmon Kings to the second intermission with a 3-2 lead. Brandon Elliott notched his first point with the Salmon Kings grabbing the second assist on the play.
The Wildcatters had the Irish luck to open the third. At 2:14 of the period Ryan Fultz scored his 16th to knot the game at three. That is the way the score stayed until the Wildcatters bench took a minor penalty at 15:51 for too many men on the ice.
Scott Turner, who has played very well for the Salmon Kings since coming over from the Peoria Rivermen in February, scored a rare Salmon Kings powerplay goal. The goal was assisted by defenseman Brad Dexter and Mark Smith to put Victoria up 4-3.
The Wildcatters then turned the puck over with the extra man on the ice and out broke Ryan Wade and Scott Turner. Turner scored his tenth of the season into the empty net and the Salmon Kings beat the Wildcatters 5-3.
The next Salmon Kings game is in Lafayette Louisiana, for the first of two against the Ice Gators on Saturday. The second game is slated for Sunday afternoon.
