Kelly Cup Tour Hits Palmetto State

March 17, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Second-Annual Kelly Cup Tour will head into South Carolina this weekend stopping in Florence on Friday for Pee Dee's game against Charlotte and in North Charleston on Saturday for South Carolina's game against Columbia. The tour was scheduled to stop in Columbia on Tuesday, but a building conflict forced the Inferno to reschedule their game.

The Palmetto State has produced more Kelly Cup champions than any other state in the eight years since the ECHL began awarding the trophy to its postseason champion as well as the only multiple winner and the only back-to-back winners. South Carolina won the inaugural Kelly Cup in 1997 and won its second title in 2001 while Greenville captured the trophy in 2002.

Florence will be the sixth stop of a tour that will see the Kelly Cup travel 7,034 miles to visit 11 ECHL cities in 51 days. A full-color display that highlights the excitement of the Kelly Cup Playoffs and outlines the history of the Kelly Cup accompanies the trophy. Each of the 28 ECHL cities were given the opportunity to host the Kelly Cup which on its inaugural tour in 2004 traveled 7,543 miles in 44 days while visiting 10 ECHL cities in eight states.

The tour opened February 18 in Reading and has already made stops in Charlotte, Toledo, Mississippi and Florida. The tour heads to The Golden State next, stopping in Bakersfield on March 25 and 26 and Long Beach on March 27.
