GATEWAY OUTSLUGS LAKE ERIE

Sauget, Ill - Friday night's loss followed an all-too-familiar script for the Crushers: Fall behind, come back, lose heartbreaker. The Gateway Grizzlies used six home runs to score eight times to beat Lake Erie by the final of 8-7 at GCS Ballpark. The Crushers have now dropped five straight.

The Crushers found themselves down 8-5 to start the ninth inning but as has been the case all season, they refused to quit. Pinch-hitter Jesse Gibson led off with a walk and would score on Drew Saylor's one-out double. Saylor would score with two outs on a Gordon Gronkowski RBI single but the Crusher rally would be halted from there. "We went up there and had some good at-bats as a club and we were right there," said Saylor afterwards. "It goes to show that we're never out of a game."

But the Crushers could not keep Gateway's hitters in the ballpark on Friday as Joseph Scaparetta and Charlie Lisk delivered two-run homers, and Scaperotta, Stephen Holdren, Brandon Peters, and Chad Rothford also came through with solo blasts to power the Grizzlies.

The Crushers stayed close early on as Andrew Davis hit a sacrifice fly in the first to give Lake Erie a 1-0 lead. Tim Binkoski added a two-run single in the third inning and Saylor came through with an RBI single in the fourth. All of those runs were unearned courtesy of five Gateway errors.

Nate Melek pitched seven innings to get the win for Gateway. He allowed four unearned runs on six hits with five strikeouts to improve to 4-4. Josh Faiola suffered the loss in relief to fall to 1-6 while Eric Ridener picked up his second save of the season.

With the loss on Friday, the Crushers fall to 25-23 and will look to snap their losing skid on Saturday when they continue their series with the Grizzlies. Paul Fagan will get the start for Lake Erie in search of his eighth win of the year.
