
Sliders Come Back from Break Swinging

Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti News Release
The Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti returned from the All-Star break by beating first place River City Rascals 6-3. Early scoring helped lead the Sliders past the Rascals at T.R. Hughes Ballpark, in MO.
Midwest jumped all over Rascal pitching scoring five runs in the first four innings. Sliders offensive onslaught with, 17 hits helped propel the Sliders past River City.
Three straight singles started the game by Zack Pace, Roberto Mena, and Clay McCord which scored the games first run. Joash Brodin made it 3-0 in the second, after belting a two-run homer over the left-center wall.
Mena hit a solo homer to leadoff the third, his second bomb of the year. Gil Zayas leadoff the second straight inning with a home run in the fourth, expanding the Slider lead to 4-0.
"It was nice to see the bats going after a four day break," Midwest manager Eric Coleman said.
Dexter native Mike Penn started the game for the Sliders. Penn only allowed one run in his first six innings of work, it came when Ryan Groth hit a solo shot in the fourth.
River City finally knocked Penn out of the game in the seventh when they scored two runs off four singles making it 5-3.
Pace singled in an insurance run for in the eighth making it 6-3. Pace finished the game 4-5 with a RBI, and two stolen bases.
"Zack hit the ball to opposite field well tonight," said Coleman. "He is a veteran that plays the game the right way. He was swinging the bat tonight, and stealing bags."
Penn received the win for throwing 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs, and struck out two. Nate Kafka, Eric Gililland, and Arshwin Asjes came in relief combine throwing 2 2/3 innings not allowing a single hit.
Saturday's game begins at 7:05 p.m. as the Midwest Sliders will throw out All-Star righty James Albury (6-1, 1.69) in seek of winning their second straight series against River City.
