River City Rascals News Release

O'FALLON, MO - The Rascals returned from the All-Star break with a 6-3 loss to the Midwest Sliders in front of 2,347 at T.R. Hughes Ballpark Friday night. The Rascals have lost all four meetings this season with the Sliders.

Midwest (23-24) pounced early and often against Josh Lowey (3-1). Zach Pace, Roberto Mena and Clay McCord started the game with three consecutive singles with McCord driving in Pace for a 1-0 lead.

The Sliders added two more in the second on a Joash Brodin two run home run to lead 3-0. Midwest ballooned the cushion out to 5-0 on solo long balls in the fourth and fifth innings from Mena and Gilberto Zayas.

The Rascals (30-18) rallied in the seventh inning with two tallies to make it 5-3, the closest River City would get. Danny Sawyer, Kevin Reynolds and Jorge Gutierrez singled with one out to load the bases against Mike Penn (5-4). Chad Maddox came off the bench and singled in two to knock out Penn. Nate Kafka came in and retired Scott Houin and JoJo Batten on fly outs to end the rally.

Penn registered the win with 6.1 innings of three run baseball on six hits. The right-hander did allow a Ryan Groth home run in the fifth to start the Rascals scoring, but did enough to earn the victory.

Lowey was tagged with his first loss of the season, allowing five runs on ten hits in five frames. The All-Star surrendered three home runs and struck out three in the setback.

Jake Edwards worked the final three innings, allowing five hits and one run. Mike Hart pitched a scoreless sixth out of the bullpen.

Six different Rascals combined for the six hits with Maddox knocking in two with his pinch-hit bases loaded single.

Pace led the way for the Sliders with four of the 17 hits. McCord and Brodin each had three while Mena and former Rascal, Jimmy Baker, contributed two hits.

Arshwin Asjes threw a scoreless ninth inning for his sixth save and second against the Rascals.

River City looks to snap their four game losing streak to Midwest tomorrow at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. A great pitching matchup features two All-Stars on the bump. James Albury (6-1) will oppose Jake Laber (6-2). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
