Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Traverse City Beach Bums snapped their franchise record 11-game losing streak in convincing fashion, opening the second half of the season with a 7-2 win over the two-time defending Frontier League champion Windy City ThunderBolts.
The Beach Bums wasted no time in setting the tone for the contest, plating two runs in the bottom of the first off of Windy City starter Dylan Axelrod. Mike Epping reached base with a one-out bunt single and advanced to third on a single by Sean Hoorelbeke. Epping came in to score on a wild pitch while Hoorelbeke, who stole third, crossed the plate when Mike Victor doubled into the leftfield corner with two outs.
Vinnie Scarduzio's 10th homer of the season cut the lead in half as he took David Nathanson's first offering of the fourth inning deep to right. Traverse City made it 3-1 with a run in the fifth. Brad Miller led off with a double and was moved to third. He scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Al Barbato, beating the throw to the plate.
The big blow came in the sixth as the Beach Bums plated four runs against Windy City reliever Stephen Flake to take control. Sean Hoorelbeke led off the inning with an infield single and Mike Victor drew a one-out walk. Anthony D'Alfonso, signed yesterday, recorded his first hit as a professional, a single to left that scored Hoorelbeke. With two outs Brad Miller sent a sinking liner into right for a triple that cleared the bases and scored two. Andrew Stafford followed with a run-scoring single.
Windy City tried to make things interesting in the ninth, scoring an unearned run and loading the bases against reliever David Hurst before Jeff Williams came in and shut the door on his 11th save of the season. David Nathanson threw 7.1 innings to tally his second win of the year. He allowed just one run on six hits while walking two and striking out seven.
Offensively, the Beach Bums totaled eight hits. Brad Miller was 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and two RBIs. Sean Hoorelbeke was 2-for-3 with two runs, a stolen base, and a walk.
The Beach Bums will continue the series with Windy City tomorrow night at 7:05pm on Wilson and Kester Night featuring a Frisbee giveaway. RHP Jason Kiley (3-6, 4.48) takes the ball for the Beach Bums while Windy City counters with LHP Dustin Pease (6-2, 4.83).
