Garrett's Start Spoiled in 2-0 Defeat

Daytona Tortugas News Release
Clearwater, FL - The Daytona Tortugas (34-22, 71-55) suffered another deflating loss to their potential playoff opponent, the Clearwater Threshers (36-22, 73-55) on Monday night at Bright House Field. Daytona fell by a final score of 2-0 and squandered a quality start from LHP Amir Garrett (9-7) by going 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
Garrett ran into trouble right away; the first three Threshers reached on a walk and two singles. Florida State League Player of the Week Rhys Hoskins drew a bases-loaded walk to put Clearwater ahead, 1-0, but Garrett buckled down from there. He struck out the next three batters to end the inning, and held the Threshers off the board for the next three frames.
Meanwhile, the Tortugas squandered a handful of opportunities against Mark Leiter (W 6-1). DH Ronald Bueno walked and CF Jeff Gelalich singled to start the first, but a line drive double play killed the rally.
LF Brian O'Grady and C Joe Hudson were hit by pitches in the second, but 2B Wendell Soto bounced out to short stop to end the inning. 1B Daniel Pigott and O'Grady started the fourth inning with singles, but Leiter handled the next three Tortugas in order. O'Grady reached second with one out on a two-base error in the sixth, but a strikeout and a fly out kept him there.
Hoskins struck again for Clearwater in the fifth, doubling the lead to 2-0 with an RBI double to left center. Daytona's most egregious inning came in the eighth, when they loaded the bases with one out on two walks and a hit batter. With the tying run in scoring position and the go-ahead run on first, Alberto Tirado induced a 4-3 double play to end the inning.
The Tortugas had a runner on second in seven of the nine innings in Monday's loss, and only one of them managed to reach third base. It was the third time this season that Daytona provided zero runs of support for Garrett. The 'Tugas have been held to one run in three of his starts.
RHP Carlos Gonzalez struck out two batters in a perfect eighth, and RHP Alejandro Chacin worked around a single for a scoreless ninth. Losers of seven out of eight games in Clearwater, Daytona will look to avoid the sweep on Tuesday night with RHP Keury Mella taking the hill for a 7:00 p.m. ET first pitch. Fans can listen to the game on The Great Voice of Volusia County, AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB, starting with the D.B. Pickles Pregame Show at 6:50 p.m. ET.
