Adirondack Thunder News Release
TONIGHT'S MATCHUP: Today's game ends a three-in-three set for Adirondack as the Thunder look to end the weekend on a high note. The Thunder have struggled this far with two losses, where they've scored just three goals against nine conceded. Adirondack and Reading have met eight times this season to date, with Adirondack holding a 5-3 record. The two teams will meet in yet another back-to-back at the end of February at the Civic Center.
NEW FACES: The Thunder have made several roster moves of the past week, as they have signed four skaters, forwards Quinn Smith, Phil Bronner and Terrence Wallin, as well as defenseman Nicholas Kaquli. Smith and Bronner made their Thunder debut in Tuesday's game against Elmira, while Kaquli and Wallin took their Thunder bow in Friday's game against Wheeling.
QUINNING: Quinn Smith scored Adirondack's lone tally in last night's defeat in Reading, as he found the back of the net for the first time in an #ADKThunder uniform with a backhanded goal late in the third period. The tally was the second of Smith's ECHL career, with the other coming as a member of the Norfolk Admirals in November.
KUQAL ME MAYBE: Defenseman Nicholas Kuqali collected the lone assist on Smith's goal, the first ECHL point of the season for the veteran defenseman. Kuqali has now skated in 11 ECHL games in 2015-16 with Fort Wayne, Evansville and Adirondack. In 46 career ECHL contests, Kuqali has collected eight assists.
THE KILLERS: With a run of solid penalty killing, the Thunder have moved from 19th in the league to 11th in penalty kill percentage. Adirondack currently sits at 84.5%, bolstered by a perfect 5-for-5 effort in last night's game. The Thunder have recorded a perfect penalty kill in 15 of their past 18 games, including each of their last six games on the road.
AHL SUCCESSES: Despite recent struggles in Adirondack, several Thunder players have found success at the AHL level, including goaltender Ken Appleby, who collected his first career AHL shutout with the Albany Devils in a 3-0 win last night. Two former Thunder players scored in the AHL last evening as well, as both David Shields (Utica) and Kyle Flanagan (Binghamton) found the back of the net in wins for their respective teams. Shields was named the second star of the game while Flanagan took home first star honors.
