Lerg's tremendous night leads Walleye to win over Fort Wayne 3-2

(Toledo, OH) Jeff Lerg turned in the save of the year to back stop the Walleye to a 3-2 shootout win over Fort Wayne Sunday night at the Huntington Center. Toledo has an overall record of 29-13-2-3 and 16-5-0-1 at home.

Following a scoreless first period it would be Toledo that found the back of the net first as Zach Nastasiuk (6th) tipped in the puck at the side of the Komets net. Austin Wuthrich set up the Nastasiuk goal with a slap shot that Fort Wayne goaltender Pat Nagle stopped by left a rebound. The Komets tied the game with a power play goal at 9:54 of the second period.

In the third period, Toledo regained the lead when Josh Shalla (10th) deflected a pass from Evan Rankin at 5:17 of the third period. The Komets tied the game at 7:12 of the third period to even the score at two.

In overtime, Fort Wayne broke out of their zone on a two on one in which the pass came across to Garrett Meurs. Meurs cut in front of Jeff Lerg's net but his backhand shot was stopped Lerg when Toledo's goaltender fell on his back and reached out with his left arm to make one of the best saves in Toledo hockey history.

Lerg was at it again in the shootout thwarting all three chances from Fort Wayne and A. J. Jenks scored to lift the Walleye to the victory.

Walleye Notes: Goaltender Jeff Lerg stopped 37 of Fort Wayne's 39 shots and his record is 20-5-1-2 on the season. A.J. Jenks leads the ECHL with 6 shootout goals. Toledo has a record of 3-2-1 vs. Fort Wayne and each of the last four games between the teams have been decided by one goal.

Walleye Transaction: Forward Tyler Sikura was loaned today to the Portland Pirates of the AHL. The first year forward is third on the Walleye in scoring with 29 points (10G, 19A) while playing to a plus four rating. The Dartmouth university product made his pro debut last spring with a pair in the AHL with Springfield. He was a captain in each of the last two seasons for the Big Green.
