Elmira Jackals News Release
ESTERO, FL - Justin Bernhardt scored for the first time since returning from an injury and Kyle Bushee recorded his second power-play goal in the last three games but the Elmira Jackals were edged by the Florida Everblades, 4-2. C.J. Motte made 24 stops but was handed the loss.
The Everblades quickly captured the lead tonight after being held off the scoresheet for 58:24 of regulation time in last night's nail-biter. Former Jackal Corey Cowick started the puck movement from the blue line sending a feed into the high slot for Brant Harris who found Matt Willows down the right wing side with a bouncing pass and Willows returned it to Cowick for the cross-crease strike. C.J. Motte appeared to get a piece of the puck but after the initial stop the puck trickled over the goal line for Cowick's 10th goal of the season coming 1:19 into the contest. Florida struck again later in the opening frame when Justin Agosta fired a shot from the point that was blocked by Jacob MacDonald in front of the net but fell into the lap of Brant Harris for the put-back tally at 16:44.
The Jackals were awarded their first power-play of the night and second power-play of the weekend just 20 seconds into the second period providing them with a chance to cut the deficit in half. Elmira moved the puck well and fired pucks on target but Anthony Peters stood tall and thwarted the Jackals power-play opportunity. Just seconds after Kevin Lynch exited the penalty box he joined a counter rush which developed into a two-on-one with Brant Harris who fed Lynch for his 11th goal of the season. Logan Roe also added an assist on Lynch's goal at 2:52 of the middle frame.
The pesky pack continued to claw as the third period commenced and their effort finally paid off as Zach Cohen stole the puck from former Jackal Rob Florentino deep in the Florida end and fed Justin Bernhardt in the slot for a tap-in tally at 2:46 of the frame. Bernhardt's seven goal of the season gave the Jackals a boost with plenty of time to chip away at the deficit. The Jackals struck again and cut Florida's lead to one at 16:46 when Kyle Bushee fired a shot from just above the goal line and banked it off of Anthony Peters who was cheating off the near post. Cason Hohmann and Kevin Clare earned the assists on Bushee's third goal of the season. However, less than a minute later, Cowick struck again streaming down the right wing side and burying a quick shot far-side past Motte to regain the two-goal lead for Florida. Matt Willows and Logan Roe assisted Cowick's second goal of the night and 11th of the season at 17:44.
C.J. Motte turned aside 24 of 28 shots faced but was handed the loss. Anthony Peters stopped 25 of 27 shots faced to earn the win.
