TONIGHT:  The 2018-19 season, presented by XYMOPrint, gets underway this evening, as the Orlando Solar Bears (0-0-0-0) open their seventh season of ECHL hockey against the Atlanta Gladiators (0-0-0-0). Orlando went 2-1-0-0 in the preseason, picking up a 3-0 win over the South Carolina Stingrays before splitting a pair of exhibition contests with the Florida Everblades. The Solar Bears are coming off their best postseason run in franchise history, advancing to the second round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs for the first time last season with a four-game sweep of South Carolina in the 2018 South Division Semifinals.
OPENING AT HOME:Â Tonight's game marks the fourth time that Orlando starts the season on home ice. Last season, the Solar Bears opened the campaign on the road for their first three games, winning the season-opener on Oct. 14 at Jacksonville with a 5-4 overtime win.Orlando holds a lifetime 16-9-1-1 (.630) record against Atlanta on home ice since the 2012-13 season.
CHANGING OF THE GUARD: The Solar Bears embark on their first season as an affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning after signing a three-year affiliation agreement this summer. Orlando has already seen its first player assigned to the team through the Tampa Bay pipeline, as goaltender Martin Ouellette was reassigned to the club following the Lightning vs. Panthers preseason game in Orlando on Sept. 27.
FAMILIAR FACES: The Solar Bears Season-Opening Roster features five returning players from last season's squad: forwards Hunter Fejes, Chris LeBlanc and Tayler Thompson, along with defensemen Mike Monfredo and Nolan Valleau, featuring a combined 232 games played for Orlando.
BEREHOWSKY CLOSING IN ON CENTURY MARK:Â With 92 career wins behind the bench of the Solar Bears, Drake Berehowsky is already the winningest head coach in the team's ECHL tenure. He is only eight wins away from joining former IHL Solar Bears bench boss Curt Fraser as the second head coach of a professional hockey team in Orlando to reach the century mark in coaching wins.
