Growlers Suffer Their First Franchise Loss
October 13, 2018 - ECHL (ECHL)
Newfoundland Growlers News Release
The Florida Everblades got their revenge on the Newfoundland Growlers Saturday night as they picked up a 3-2 win to split Molson Opening Weekend.
Giorgio Estephan had the only goal in the opening frame on what was meant to be a pass across the crease, but was re-directed in the net by the Everblades to pull the home team ahead 1-0. Growlers netminder Michael Garteig stood especially tall between the pipes in the opening frame turning aside all 18 shots he faced.
Florida got on the board to even it up at 4:19 of the second period when Kyle Platzer fired the puck in an empty cage after an unfortunate bounce off a Growlers skate to make it 1-1 for his second in as many nights. The Everblades followed that up with a powerplay tally at 9:41 of the middle frame when Steven Lorentz fired a shot through traffic that beat Garteig to give the Everblades a 2-1 lead.
With just over three minutes to play in the second period Sam Babintsev cleaned up a scramble in front of the Everblades net to tie the game at two for Babintsev's second goal in as many nights.
The Everblades re-took the lead at 5:33 of the third period when Mitch Vandergunst stuck it short-side under Garteig's shoulder.
The Growlers mustered up some chances with Michael Garteig on the bench but couldn't get it past Jamie Phillips and the Everblades held on for the 3-2 win.
