Saginaw Spirit News Release
SAGINAW, MI. - On Sunday evening, the Saginaw Spirit (27-23-8-0, 62 points, 3rd in West Division) square off against the Oshawa Generals (29-26-3-0, 61 points, 3rd in East Division) to begin a four-game homestand at The Dow Event Center in Saginaw, Michigan. So far, the Spirit are 7-2-1-0 on Sunday games during the 2017-18 season, and 4-1-0-0 in Sunday home games. Tonight is Covenant Kids Day with $5 tickets available to kids 12 and under. The puck drops at 5:30 p.m.
Heading into tonight's contest, the Spirit are looking to rebound from consecutive 4-1 losses to the Erie Otters on Friday night and the Niagara IceDogs Thursday.
In Friday's matchup, Blade Jenkins recorded his 18th goal of the season on a first period powerplay opportunity. With a quick shot from the right faceoff dot, Jenkins moved into a tie for fourth place in OHL rookie goals and overall scoring for the 2017-18 season.
Despite Jenkins' tally, the Otters pieced together two separate two-goal frames (first and third periods) to secure a 4-1 victory over Saginaw.
On the Oshawa side of things, the Generals arrive in Saginaw just one night after battling the Flint Firebirds. In the Friday night tussle, left wing Hayden McCool earned first star honors with a two-goal night, while Generals forwards Brendan Harrogate and Danil Antropov both added a goal and an assist in the win. Nick Wong also contributed a goal in the outing, and Oshawa goaltender Kyle Keyser led the Generals to a 33-save performance in the 5-2 victory.
The win Friday night over Flint gives Oshawa three consecutive victories.
The Spirit hope to reverse their fortunes this evening having the benefit of an 8-5-0-1 all-time record with one tie on home ice against the Generals since the clubs' inception in 2002.
Saginaw also looks to continue its five-game winning streak against Oshawa, which is the longest such streak in franchise history between the two clubs.
Spirit netminder Evan Cormier has played a demonstrative role in these victories as the New Jersey Devils' draft pick has posted a 4-0 record with a 1.25 goals-against average, and a .944 save percentage when facing the Generals during his OHL career.
On the Oshawa side of the ledger, the Generals ice three forwards that have amassed 50 points so far in Boston Bruins prospect Jack Studnicka (59), Allan McShane (55) and Domenico Commisso (53).
The Spirit's Marcus Crawford too will eclipse the 50-point mark with his next point, as the puck-moving defenseman presently stands with 12 goals and 37 assists on the season, leading the Spirit hockey club.
