February 25, 2018 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Barrie Colts News Release
A 48 save performance for Kai Edmonds' first career OHL shutout helps Colts defeat the Attack 4-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Following their 5-3 win over the Guelph Storm on Saturday night, the Colts had to turn things around quickly to head to Owen Sound for the last time this season. This was the second last meeting between these two out of conference foes this season.
The first part of the opening period was very quiet as both teams were trying to feel each other out. Then things started to pick up a bit. Both teams coming up with some quality chances with the best chance coming off the stick of Luke Bignell, who was denied on the partial break.
After a scoreless first, it wasn't until midway through the second period when Barrie would look to strike. It was Andrei Svechnikov breaking along the wing and beating his defender wide. He moved the puck from his backhand to his forhand but it rang off the post and stayed out.
Moments later, Ryan Suzuki was fed a breakaway pass by T.J. Fergus, but he was denied by the shoulder over Olivier Lefrennierre of the Attack.
With just over six minutes to go in the second period Owen Sound would get a powerplay. On the man advantage they would start to pepper Barrie netminder, Kai Edmonds who was sharp on multiple occasions. The Attack tried to get him going from side to side, but he was there to deny multiple opportunities with little to no rebounds and was a big reason the Colts were able to kill off the penalty.
His biggest save came with just under four minutes to go in the period. On a broken two on one the Attack would put a cross ice pass that was tipped towards the net, but Edmonds came up with a huge stop to keep the game scoreless once again.
The third period would begin the same way the second would end, more big stops by Edmonds. Coming up with two massive saves in the first couple of minutes to keep the game locked at zeros.
It would take till nearly the halfway point of the third period before the game would see it's first goal. Nearing the end of a Barrie powerplay, the Colts were just able to keep the puck in at the blueline. It was chipped deep into the corner for Aidan Brown, who battled a defender for positioning which allowed Jason Willms to come in to scoop up the puck and feed a wide open Jaden Peca in front. He put it blocker side and in the back of the net for his 14th goal of the season.
The goal sparked the Colts offense. Just over a minute later Barrie would strike again. It was a play that started in the offensive corner. The puck was poked loose by Suzuki out to Lucas Chiodo who made a little give and go play with Zach Magwood and snapped home his 24th of the season to make it 2-0.
Moments later it was Barrie's top line doing what they do best....scoring. Andrei Svechnikov moved the puck up along the boards to Aaron Luchuk who then fed Dmitry Sokolov in front and he made no mistake for his 42nd goal of the season and his 200th career OHL point. The assists by Svechnikov and Luchuk also extended their point streaks. For the Russian import it was his 15th straight game with a point. For the overaged Luchuk, he extended his to 18 straight games.
With 1:45 on the clock Chiodo would be given the puck by Magwood and he would slide it into the empty net for the 4-0 lead.
The win brings Barrie's record on the season to 36-21-2-1 as they go 2-1 on the weekend. Colts are back in action Friday night as they head to Niagara to take on the IceDogs before coming home to take on the Kingston Frontenacs Saturday night at home.
