Worcester Tornadoes News Release
WORCESTER - The Worcester Tornadoes rode four Game One home runs and another sparkling performance by Tom Cochran to a 9-1 win over the Nashua Pride before dropping Game Two, 6-1, on Thursday night at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.
Cochran was impressive in Game One, allowing one run over a seven-inning complete game effort, the second time he's gone the distance this season. He only allowed four hits while walking two and striking out four to improve to 8-0 on the season. Chuck Jeroloman was the offensive hero in the first contest with a pair of home runs and three RBIs. B.J. Weed was 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored, and an RBI while Omar Pena was also 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Josh Farkes hit a three-run homer in the second inning and Scott Grimes hit a solo shot in the first inning of Game Two for Worcester's other home runs of the evening.
After being held at bay in the first, the Tornadoes rode six-straight second inning hits to the 5-0 advantage. It all started when Francisco Caraballo reached via an infield hit after third baseman Argenis Tavarez robbed the Worcester leftfielder of a potential double down the line. Jeroloman followed with his first of two Game One home runs for the 2-0 lead. Pena continued the onslaught with a double and Jeff LaHair hit a flair single to set up Farkes' second home run of the season (and career). It was a no-doubt shot to left field, marking the Tornadoes' fifth-consecutive hit. Weed finished the inning with a single to round out the outstanding inning.
Worcester upped its lead to 7-0 in the fourth when Grimes' triple drove in Pena and Weed. Prior to his hit, there was a short delay as a squirrel entered the field down the right field line, headed towards home plate before jumping onto the railing of the Nashua dugout and scampered from first base to second base before exiting under the center field wall.
Solo home runs from Jeroloman and Weed in the sixth and seventh rounded out Worcester's scoring. Nashua got to Cochran for the first time in the seventh, using a Bryan Duplissie double to drive in Ismael Castro for the 9-1 final.
In Game Two, Grimes gave Worcester the quick 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the first inning. Nashua answered in the top of the second when a Mike Torres single scored Dennis Abreu who led off the inning with a single and stolen base. The Pride took their first lead of the day when Sandy Almonte drew a bases loaded walk to make it 2-1. Worcester starter Shaun McNamara minimized the damage when he educed Castro into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.
The Pride added some distance in the third with a four-spot for the 6-1 advantage. Torres drove in the first run of the inning with a single down the left field line, scoring Duplissie who led off the inning with a double. Tavarez then blooped a single to left field, scoring Jerod Edmonson for the 4-1 lead. Vinny Pennell concluded the scoring with a two-RBI single, scoring Torres and Tavarez for the five-run margin.
Worcester now looks ahead to another doubleheader vs. Nashua on Friday. Starting at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday night's suspended game will be resumed in the top of the fourth inning with the score tied at two. It will go the normal nine innings before another seven-inning affair. Eddie Pena is set to start the suspended game with Matt Weagle taking the hill for Game Two.
Friday is also the Tornadoes' third postgame fireworks show of the year, so be sure to stick around following the doubleheader! The series and first half concludes on Saturday, July 12, which will be "Going Green Night" sponsored by Waste Management and Sony.
