Defense proves offensive in loss for Rapidz

(OTTAWA, ON) July 10, 2008 - On a night which featured "Self Defence and Martial Arts Night" at Rapidz Stadium, the teams could have used some defence as a combined six errors, were committed on 27 hits with 18 runs. Despite a late comeback, the Rapidz fell short losing 10-8.

Atlantic City starter J.C. Huguet (6-1) earned the win pitching five innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on nine hits, with two walks. Fraser Robinson (2-4) is credited with the loss allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 10 hits, one walk with two strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work. Walker Whitley picks up his fourth save of the season in the win for Atlantic City.

The Atlantic City Surf wasted no time taking revenge for last night's loss, scoring a run in both the first and second innings.

The Rapidz responded in bottom of the first after Juan Infante doubled and came around to score on an RBI single by Jereme Milons. The Rapidz came back in the third after Jose de los Santos extended his consecutive game hit streak to 14 games with a leadoff double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Geiger.

The game opened up in the fourth, beginning with the Surf scoring seven runs in the top of the inning to take a 9-2 lead. The Surf posted six hits including two singles, three doubles and a home run by Clyde Williams to combine for seven runs.

The Rapidz came back to score four in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 9-6. The Rapidz sent nine batters to the plate and registered three hits, scoring four runs with two errors charged to the Surf.

The Rapidz cut the Surf lead to one run after Kyle Geiger walked, advanced to second on a single by Jose Salas and later scored on an error. Jose Salas then scored after stealing second, advanced to third on a balk and scored on an error to third baseman Gil Zayas, cutting the Surf lead to 9-8 after seven innings.

The Rapidz continue their four game series against the Surf Friday, July 11th at 7:05pm. Ottawa's Adam Hawes (2-5, 4.17 ERA) will pitch for the Rapidz against Adam Cox (4-2, 2.56 ERA) for the Surf.

The Rapidz have the second series of their home stand beginning Sundy, July 13 at 1:05pm against their national rivals the Quebec Capitales. Sunday will be "Expo Day" at Rapidz Stadium where former Expo greats Jim Fanning, Claude Raymond and Warren Cromartie will be in attendance along with long-time Expo's announcer Jacques Doucet.
