Brockton Rox News Release

Brockton, MA (July 10, 2008) - The Brockton Rox built a 6-1 lead over the first six innings on Thursday night, but saw the New Jersey Jackals erase it entirely over the last three innings as the Jackals took a 7-6 win at Yogi Berra Stadium.

Brockton led from the start after OF Jud Thigpen's RBI double in the first inning. The Rox pushed across three more runs in the fourth inning and two in the sixth for a commanding 6-1 lead. Rox RHP Wayne Lundgren held the Jackals to one run on two hits over the first five innings, but New Jersey's offense came alive in the sixth.

The first three batters of the sixth inning reached and two came home to score on 3B Chris Kelly's two-run double. Lundgren then retired the next three batters to limit the damage, and Brockton still led 6-3. However in an eerily similar seventh inning, the first three batters reached and the Jackals cut the lead to 6-5 on CF Zack Smithlin's two-run double. Lundgren then departed and was relieved by LHP Jacob Ramos who retired the next three batters on seven pitches to leave the tying run at third base.

But in the eighth, the Jackals took its first lead of the game against Ramos with the tying run on SS Casey Gordon's RBI single, and the decisive run scoring on Smithlin's RBI single. New Jersey closer LHP Rusty Tucker closed the door in the ninth inning for his 11th save of the year. He faced just three batters despite a one-out single, when he induced a game-ending double play.

The Rox and Jackals meet again on Friday night at Yogi Berra Stadium with Rox RHP Stevie Delabar set to take on New Jersey RHP Juan Done. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
