July 10, 2008 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Sussex Skyhawks News Release

AUGUSTA, N.J. -- *Quebec starter Luis Valdez gave up no earned runs and just five hits in eight innings as the Capitales topped the Sussex Skyhawks 7-2 on Thursday night at Skylands Park.

With the win, Quebec (30-15) clinched the first-half title in the Can-American League and has secured a spot in the postseason in September.

Valdez (7-1) walked one and struck out six to pick up his seventh win of the season for the first place Capitales. Sussex picked up two unearned runs in the bottom of the third, but that was all the Skyhawks would muster against Valdez. Jason Schutt pitched a scoreless ninth for Quebec.

Mark Michael (2-3) gave up six runs (four earned) on seven hits over six innings and took the loss for Sussex (24-21).

Quebec snapped a 2-2 game in the top of the sixth when right fielder Alex Nunez drilled a three run home run over the right field wall to make it 5-2 in favor of the Capitales. Greg Stevens and Jean-Michel Salvas then followed with doubles to give Quebec a 6-2 lead. Quebec plated another run in the top of the eighth to make it 7-2.

Quebec and Sussex return to action at Skylands Park on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. for game three of the four-game set. Friday night is also Fireworks Night.
