Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Aberdeen Pounds Out 12 Hits, Beats Tri-City, 7-5
In a offensively-powered contest, the IronBirds defeated the Tri-City ValleyCats, 7-5. The IronBirds offense was powered by the bottom of their lineup, more specifically their five through nine hitters who went ten for nineteen, with seven singles, a double, a triple, and knocked in five RBIs. Nik Nowottnick earned the win for the IronBirds, his second of the year, allowing four hits, one earned run, and one walk over 1.1 innings in relief. Ivan Hernandez earned his third save of the year, retiring the final two batters of the game.
Rowdy Riley Palmer
The IronBirds designated hitter Riley Palmer continued on his offensive tear last night, going three for four, being just a home run short of the cycle. He also knocked in three RBis. Over his last five games, Palmer is batting .400, with five RBIs, and two runs scored. He's also recorded a base hit in five of his last six games.
Bullpen Comes Up Big
With starting pitcher John Means going just 3.1 innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs, one walk, and striking out three, the bullpen came up big last night in the victory. Derrick Bleeker allowed no hits and no earned runs in his 2.1 innings and Josh Walker allowed just three hits, two runs (one earned), and struck out one in his 1.1 innings. Walker ran into some trouble in the ninth, allowing a two-run RBI double, but Ivan Hernandez was able to come in and retire the next two batters to earn the save.
A Familiar Foe
Tri-City will send RHP Troy Scribner to the mound against Aberdeen tonight. Scribner faced the IronBirds on July 18, allowing just three hits, one run (unearned), one walk, and striking out six in 6.0 innings. He's ranked as the second best pitcher in the NYPL, pitching to a 0.90 ERA in 40.0 innings pitched.
On the Mound Tonight...
The IronBirds will send RHP Stephen Tarpley to the mound tonight. In his last start on July 22, he allowed four hits, two earned runs, one walk, and struck out seven against Brooklyn. He last faced Tri-City on July 16, allowing three hits, two runs (all unearned), three walks, and striking out two over 4.0 innings. Tarpley has pitched to a 5.40 ERA over 28.1 innings pitched.
