Tigers Win on a Balk

Norwich, CT - The Connecticut Tigers (22-22) defeated the Staten Island Yankees (22-22) by a score of 5-4 Monday night at Dodd Stadium. The Tigers won on a walk-off balk. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Tigers 1B Will Maddox (2-4) who was on third base drew Yankees LHP Rony Bautista (1-1) to balk which brought Maddox in to score as the winning run.

The Tigers grabbed offensive production from SS Joey Pankake (3-4) who put together a three hit, two RBI performance. Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Pankake delivered a game-tying RBI single that scored LF Rashad Brown (0-3). DH Ben Verlander (1-4) chipped in with an RBI single in the first inning that gave the Tigers the early 1-0 lead. Everyone in the lineup for the Tigers reached base at least one time and eight out of the nine batters grabbed at least one hit. Despite the win, the Tigers were 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left seven on base.

Staten Island didn't help themselves out in the loss as they were 1-for-9 with runners in scoring positon and left eight on base. Credit the Tigers pitching for stopping the Yankees when it mattered most. RHP Gage Smith was the third pitcher used for the Tigers as he pitched 2.1 scoreless innings while striking out two batters. RHP Joe Jimenez (1-1) picked up his first victory with Connecticut as he pitched two scoreless innings while also striking out two batters.

In the series finale, Tigers RHP Chase Edwards (3-2, 3.26) is slated to face Yankees RHP David Palladino (4-2, 4.06). Tomorrow night is Dollar Dogs presented by Kayem.
