Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MASS. - After a one-hour, 12 minute delay to the start of the game as a microburst of rain passed through LeLacheur Park, not once, but twice, the Lowell Spinners jumped out to an early lead before the Brooklyn Cyclones used some bloops and Spinners miscues to push across six runs in the sixth inning. On the back of the six run sixth inning, the Cyclones topped the Spinners, 8-5, Monday night at LeLacheur Park.

Lowell (19-25) plated a run in the first inning, taking advantage of some advantageous play by Danny Mars. After leading off the inning with a walk, Mars stole second and with one out stole third, scoring on a Sam Travis infield single to give the Spinners a 1-0 lead.

Brooklyn (22-22) evened the score in the top of the second inning on a lead-off home run by Michael Bernal, tying the score at one. It was not as simple as that however, as Spinners' catcher David Sopilka took exception to Bernal's admiring his work, as the two jabbed at each other and home plate Dave Albertson warned both teams before the inning resumed.

The Spinners would re-take the lead in the third inning, though there could have been more. After Mars was thrown out at second trying to stretch a single into a double, Monge doubled to left and came around to score when Anthony Chavez couldn't handle Travis's grounder up the middle as Monge raced in to score and give Lowell a 2-1 lead.

With Rob Smorol on in relief, Amed Rosario led off the sixth inning with a double. After a one-out walk and wild pitch advanced Rosario to third, Smorol battled back to strike out Bernal. Will Fulmer followed with a shallow pop to right field, but it found a home between Nick Moore and Mauricio Dubon, plating two and giving the Cyclones a lead. From there it was back-to-back singles and a bloop double to centerfield to plate two more before a Deiner Lopez error extended the inning even further. Adrian Abreu plated one final run to give the Cyclones a 7-2 lead.

After the Cyclones pushed across a run against Ellis Jimenez in the seventh, the Spinners answered for a pair after the stretch. After two quick outs, Monge singled and Travis followed with a triple before coming around to score when Jhoan Urena threw it away trying to get Aneudis Peralta, cutting the lead to 8-4.

The Spinners would get another run in the eighth after New York-Penn League Player of the Week Dubon singled through the hole to lead off the inning, coming around to score on a two-out single by Mars, bringing the deficit to three.

Lowell brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, after back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, but Cisco Tellez grounded into a double play and Nick Moore flew to center to end the game.

The Spinners had 13 hits on the night, but could not make the most of them. Travis led the way with a three-hit night, driving in two. Monge also had three hits while Dubon extended his hitting streak to nine games with a two-hit game and Mars to 11 with his two-hit night.

Jake Drehoff deserved better, going five innings allowing just one run on three hits, striking out three. Smorol (0-4, 4.91) was tagged with the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits and a walk, striking out one. Jimenez went the final three innings, allowing just an unearned run on one hit and two walks, striking out two.

The Spinners conclude the homestand Tuesday morning when the two teams meet again for a special 11:05am first pitch. Kevin McAvoy (0-1, 5.87) gets the ball for the Spinners.
